Fernande Barrey (born January 9, 1893 in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme , † July 14, 1960 in Paris ) was a French prostitute , model and painter .

Life

Fernande Barrey came from the Picardy region and came to Paris around 1908, where she initially earned her living as a prostitute. She later became a model for Jean Agélou , Amedeo Modigliani and Chaim Soutine . The two painters persuaded Barrey to study at the Paris art school and to paint himself.

In March 1917, she met the Japanese painter Tsuguharu Foujita (1886–1968) in Café La Rotonde in the bohemian district of Montparnasse . For him it was love at first sight. Two weeks later they were married at the Montmartre registry office . To escape the German bombs, pulled the couple Foujita 1918 after Cagnes-sur-Mer , where they stayed for more than a year, met many friends and painted. During this time Fernande Barrey made friends with the young Jeanne Hébuterne . When Modigliani died of tuberculosis in 1920 , Barrey tried in vain to comfort his fiancée. She could not prevent Jeanne, eight months pregnant, from suicide .

From 1925 the couple had an open relationship; both had relationships with people of both sexes. After she confessed to Foujita the love affair with his cousin, the painter Koyanagi, he could not forgive her for this. A short time later he met the Belgian artist Lucie Badoul (known as Youki ) at Café La Rotonde and spent three days with her in a hotel room. During these days Fernande was desperately looking for her husband, also in the morgues of Paris. In 1928 the couple divorced and she lived with Koyanagi in Montmartre. After she separated from her lover in 1935, the relationship with Tsuguharu Foujita improved again. He supported her financially until her death.
