Virachai Virameteekul ( Thai วีระ ชัย วีระ เมธี กุล , Wīrachạy wīrameṭhīkul ; born July 8, 1967 ) is a Thai university professor, manager and politician.

Family and education

He was born the son of Suchai and Sumali Virameteekul. In 1985 he graduated from Boston University , USA with a BSBA and an MBA from Clark University the following year . At Chulalongkorn University Virachai his doctorate at the Faculty of Business Administration (Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy) and obtained in 1994 his PhD.

Career

As a university professor

After completing his doctorate in business administration, Virameteekul began his professional life as a professor at the business administration faculty, Chulalongkorn and at the same time taught at many universities as a visiting professor, such as B. at Dhurakij Pundit University , Bangkok University , Assumption University and Thammasat University .

In the private sector

After 4 years as a university professor, he left the civil service in 1994 and left the academic world. His father, Suchai Virameteekul, a seasoned Thai-Chinese businessman who has close ties to major companies in China, was asked to invest in the Chinese banking industry and financial institutions at the same time. Virachai joined TM International Bank at the time of the turn of Chinese capitalism as Deputy Managing Director and General Manager and most recently worked as Vice President of the Business Development Bank in Shanghai.

Political career

Started

In 2000 he joined Thaksin Shinawatra's Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party . He was presented by them as an example of a politician who was both an academic and has experience as a manager in the private sector. He ran for one of the top list of the TRT. After the 2001 election he was elected first vice-president of the Committee on Monetary, Finance, Banking and Credit Institutions, and in 2003 first vice-president of the committee on economic development.

Thaksin government

In Thaksin Shinawatra's cabinet he was Vice Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives, then Deputy Finance Minister, and finally Deputy Foreign Minister.

Surayud government

When General Surayud Chulanont took office following the September 2007 military coup that overturned Thaksin, Virachai was appointed deputy general secretary for politics. He was responsible for the country's political affairs as well as for working with the appointed National Legislative Assembly.

Appointment as minister

On December 20, 2008, Virachai Virameteekul became a minister in Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's office . He represented the Prime Minister on the Public Sector Development Committee, the Cabinet Secretariat, the Thai Village Fund and the National Economic and Social Advisory Board. In August 2011, the Abhisit government was replaced by the government of Yingluck Shinawatra following the 2011 general election .
