Virbhadra Singh ( Hindi : वीरभद्र सिंह Vīrbhadra Siṃh [ ˈʋiːrbʱʌdrʌ ˈsɪŋh ]; born June 23, 1934 in Sarahan , Shimla District , British India ; † July 8, 2021 in Shimla ) was an Indian politician ( Congress Party ). From December 25, 2012, he was Chief Minister (Head of Government) of the state of Himachal Pradesh. He previously held the post from 1983–90, 1993–98 and 2003–07. He was also Minister of State (State Secretary) in the Indian central government from 1980 to 1983 and from 2009 to 2012.

Virbhadra Singh was born on June 23, 1934 in Sarahan in what is now Shimla District in the state of Himachal Pradesh. He comes from the Rajput ruling family of the princely state of Bashahr . He received his education at the Bishop Cottons School in Shimla and at St. Stephens College in New Delhi . He earned it the qualification of a horticulturist (horticulturist) . After his father's death in 1947, Virbhadra Singh inherited him as Raja of Bashahr at the age of 13 . He held this position until the princely states were dissolved in 1956.

In the all-India parliamentary election in 1962 , Virbhadra Singh was elected to the Lok Sabha (the Indian lower house) for the Congress Party, and was re-elected in 1967 . In 1971 he became Deputy Minister (Deputy Minister) for Tourism and Civil Aviation. After being re-elected to Lok Sabha in 1980 , he was Minister of State for Industry from 1982–83. Between 1962 and 2007 he was also elected seven times as a member of the legislative assembly of the state of Himachal Pradesh. From 1983-90, 1993-98 and 2003-07 he held the office of Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and between 1998 and 2003 was opposition leader in the Parliament of Himachal Pradesh. After being re-elected to the 15th Lok Sabha in the 2009 elections , he joined the coalition government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as Minister of Steel . After the Congress party's victory in the state elections in Himachal Pradesh, he returned to the post of Chief Minister of the state in 2012.

The election to the parliament of Himachal Pradesh on November 9, 2017 was won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Singh's successor in the office of Chief Minister was Jai Ram Thakur from December 27, 2017 .

Virbhadra Singh had a son and four daughters.

He died on July 8, 2021 at Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla of complications from COVID-19 .
