The Virtual Regional Maritime Traffic Center ( VRMTC ) is a maritime safety network that has been operated by more than 20 NATO , EU and Mediterranean countries since September 20, 2006 under the leadership of the Italian Navy .

development

In October 2002, the participants of the 4th Regional Sea Power Symposium for the Navies of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Countries in Venice agreed to improve the safety of shipping in the Mediterranean. In 2003 the Italian Navy started a pilot project in the field of data exchange between over 20 states that had participated in the symposium . A simple, flexible system based on the Internet was proposed, into which data on maritime traffic is fed in by all participants. The situation report compiled on this basis is made available to all member organizations. Sea vessels of over 300 GRT are recorded, which are equipped with a corresponding transponder . Further data from other sources can be included depending on the level of participation. The possibility of participating in the project at different levels enables cooperation across alliances. In general, no secret information is exchanged. The VRMTC Data Fusion Center is located at the fleet command (CINCNAV) of the Italian Navy in Santa Rosa near Rome .

Since 2010 the VRMTC has been networked with comparable systems from countries bordering the Atlantic and Indian Oceans ( Trans-Regional Maritime Network ).
