Viru Õlu is an Estonian brewery and beverage factory based in Haljala ( Lääne-Viru County ).
In the summer of 1975 the brewery was founded as the Viru collective farm , named after the North Estonian region of Wierland . From 1975 to 1988 the beers Ziguli eripruul , Riia , Moskva and Kuldne or for the Soviet market were produced in Haljala . In 1990, Viru, the first black beer was brewed. The Toolse brand has been produced in Haljala since 1991 , with the seasonal Jõulumees beer at Christmas 1992 .
In 1991 the Soviet company was privatized and transformed into the AS Viru Õlu joint stock company. The current major shareholder is the Danish brewery Harboes Bryggeri A / S. The Palmse brand has been brewed in Haljala since 1993, and the Vihula , Lihavõtte and Jaanik beers since 1994 . Other beer brands from Viru Õlu are Mihkli , Frederik Premium , Frederik Pilsner , Bear Beer , Vahva Sõdur , Viru Preemium .
Viru Õlu also produces the soft drinks Orange , Original taste Cola , Aqua vesi , Mõmmi , Fine , Mödu , Jäätee Exotic and Kingsway , the energy drink Hustler and various syrups . Viru Õlu exports its products to Latvia , Lithuania , Denmark and Italy .
Toomas Varek was managing director from 1992 to 1996.
