Toomas Varek

Toomas Varek (born June 6, 1948 in Rakvere ) is an Estonian politician.

Life

Toomas Varek graduated from Kunda in 1967 and graduated from the Estonian Agricultural Academy (now the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences ) in Tartu in 1972 as a mechanical engineer .

From 1972 to 1975 Varek was department head of a collective farm in Haljala , from 1975 to 1982 director of a sovkhoz in Kullaaru (today Rakvere municipality ) and from 1982 to 1992 chairman of the Viru collective farm in Haljala, Aaspere and Vihula . From 1992 to 1996 Toomas Varek was managing director of the Viru Õlu brewery in Haljala.

In 1993 Varek went into politics as a member of Haljala Township Council. In 1996 he became mayor of the city of Rakvere and remained so until 1999.

In 1997 he joined the Estonian Center Party and was elected to the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) in 1999. From 1999 to 2004 he was parliamentary group leader of his party. In 2003 he briefly held the post of Interior Minister of the Republic of Estonia in the cabinet of Prime Minister Siim Kallas . From 2005 to 2006 he was Vice President of the Estonian Parliament, from 2006 to 2007 Estonian Parliament President.

Toomas Varek lives in a illegitimate partnership. He has two grown children.
