Marquess of Queensberry
Marquess of Queensberry is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland , named after the hill Queensberry in southern Scotland .
Award and history of the title
The title was created on February 11, 1682 for Lord Justice General (Chief Justice) William Douglas, 3rd Earl of Queensberry , along with the subordinate titles Earl of Drumlanrig and Sanquhar , Viscount Nith, Torthorwald and Ross and Lord Douglas of Kilmount , Middlebie and Dornock . He came from the line Douglas of Drumlanrig of the Clan Douglas . His grandfather had already been raised to Viscount of Drumlanrig and Lord Douglas of Hawick and Tibbers on April 1, 1628 , and Earl of Queensberry , Viscount of Drumlanrig and Lord Douglas of Hawick and Tibbers on June 13, 1633 . His father bequeathed this title to him in 1671.
On February 3, 1684, the 1st Marquess of Queensberry was also elevated to Duke of Queensberry and Marquess of Dumfriesshire . These titles fell to Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, in 1810 due to special inheritance regulation . The 2nd Duke of Queensberry was also elevated to Duke of Dover , Marquess of Beverley and Baron Ripon on May 26, 1708 in the Peerage of Great Britain . These titles expired in 1778 with the death of the 3rd Duke of Queensberry.
Since the eldest son of the 2nd Duke of Queensberry was mentally ill, this inherited only the title of 3rd Marquess of Queensberry when his father died, while all other titles of the father fell to his younger brother as 3rd Duke of Queensberry. When the 3rd Marquess died childless in 1715, this title also fell to his brother.
The later 3rd Duke of Queensberry was elevated to Earl of Solway , Viscount of Tiberris and Lord Douglas of Lockerbie, Dalveen and Thornhill on June 17, 1706 . These titles also expired when he died in 1778.
The dignity of the 6th Marquess of Queensberry and the other titles fell in 1810 at the death of the 4th Dukes of Queensberry in the male line to his distant relative Charles Douglas, 1st Baron Solway . He had already been raised to Baron Solway , of Kinmount in the County of Dumfries , in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on June 7, 1833 , and on June 27, 1786, his father gave him the title of 5th Baronet , of Kelhead in Scotland, who had been bestowed on February 26, 1668 in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia to his ancestor James Douglas , a nephew of the 2nd Earl of Queensberry. The Baronetcy has been a subordinate title of the respective Marquess since 1810, the Barony Solway already expired in 1837 when the 6th Marquess died childless and his other titles fell to his brother as the 7th Marquess.
The apparent marriage of the respective marquess bears the courtesy title Viscount Drumlanrig , whose apparent marriage bears no courtesy title.
