Awards and other titles
The title was first created on November 14, 1706 in the Peerage of England for Henry Gray, 12th Earl of Kent , together with the parent titles Marquess of Kent and Earl of Harold . In 1702 he had inherited the title of 12th Earl of Kent from his father , which had been created in 1465 in the Peerage of England for his ancestor Edmund Gray , and also in 1702 from his mother the title of 2nd Baron Lucas , who in 1663 in the Peerage of England was created for this. In 1710 and 1740 he was also awarded the title Duke of Kent or Marquess Gray in the Peerage of Great Britain . When he died in June 1740, his sons had already died without any offspring. So all his titles became extinct, with the exception of Marquessate Gray and Barony Lucas, which passed to his granddaughter Jemima.
The second bestowal of the title was created on April 28, 1827 in the Peerage of United Kingdom for Frederick Robinson , on the occasion of his appointment as Minister of War and Colonial Affairs . From August 31, 1827 to January 21, 1828 he was British Prime Minister . On January 28, 1859 he was also raised to Earl of Ripon . On June 23, 1871, his son, the 2nd Earl, was also raised to Marquess of Ripon , who had also inherited the title of 3rd Earl de Gray and 4th Baron Grantham in 1859 . He was Viceroy of India from 1880 to 1884 . With the death of his son, the 2nd Marquess, in 1923 all named titles expired.
