The bird (pronounced wogel , Slovenian for corner ) is a 1922  m. i. J. high mountain in the Julian Alps in Slovenia . It is best known for the ski area of the same name , which leads to just below the 1880  m high Šija summit .

Location and surroundings

The bird is located about 25 km west-southwest of Bled in the southeast part of the Julian Alps. It is part of a mountain ridge that extends from the Vratca mountain pass (also called Bogatinsko Sedlo , 1803  m ) in a west-east direction and leads east over the Vratca saddle ( 1668  m ) to the Šija pre-peak, one kilometer away. To the southwest the bird sends a pronounced ridge which Žabiški Kuk , who on a 1844  m high pre-summit ends. The valley head of the Wocheiner valley with the Wocheiner lake ( Bohinjsko jezero ) extends to the northeast of the mountain . To the southwest is Tolmin in the Soča Valley .

The mountain is up to an altitude of about 1300  m forested, above which characterize mountain pine and schrofendurchsetzte alpine boots the image. The area is part of the Triglav National Park .

Ski Area

The Vogel ski area opens up the slopes of the mountain from the north, from the Ukanc settlement ( 569  m ) on the west bank of Lake Wochein . A cable car leads to the Rjava skala plateau at an altitude of 1537  m , from where there is a view of the Wochein area. In addition, the ski area has five chair lifts and a snowboard park. The highest point accessible by lifts is the postaja Šija mountain station (also called Plato ) at 1790  m .

The development for skiing began in 1964. The cable car was renovated in 2001. In contrast to the other lifts, it is also in operation in summer.

The bird is popular with hikers because of its easy accessibility and good views . The easiest and shortest ascent leads from the cable car station on a simple, marked hiking trail to the summit. Other routes from Ukanc in the north, from Tolminske Ravne (approx. 900  m ) above Tolmin in the southwest and from Kneške Ravne (approx. 800  m ) in the southeast are also not difficult, but much longer. In addition, climbing the bird is part of the ridge crossing . In winter the Vogel is a popular ski tour destination . Refuge huts in the area of ​​the mountain are the Koča Merjasec na Voglu at the cable car top station ( 1535  m ) and the Koča na planini Razor ( 1315  m ) on the way from Tolminske Ravne in the southwest.
