The bird Peak is a 1,350 m high mountain in the southeast of South Georgia . In the Salvesen Range it rises 2.5 km southeast of the Ross Pass .
A team led by Carl Schrader named it during the First International Polar Year (1882-1883) as the Matterhorn because of its similarity to its famous Swiss counterpart . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee changed its name in 1957. The new namesake is the German physicist and meteorologist Peter Vogel (1856–1915), who served as Schrader's deputy on the German expedition.
