history

Plan (as of January 2020)

In mid-1997, an extension site was acquired to improve the accommodation options for large birds, but the development of this area has only made moderate progress. The park had long been threatened with the end because the funds were exhausted.

In the spring of 2006 the bird park was closed as a precaution due to the H5N1 bird flu .

Until the temporary closure in 2012 due to strict requirements of the Groß-Gerau veterinary office, animals from all parts of the world were shown in the bird park in around 100 aviaries, outdoor enclosures and heated facilities for tropical birds. However, the association expected a reopening after some renovation work had been carried out.

Since the association was converted into a GmbH in January 2017, work has been carried out on the redesign and renaturation of the area in order to prepare the area for the general public. For this purpose, the old enclosures and buildings that cannot be rehabilitated are to disappear and the property is to be converted into a "nature park".

Other activities and special features

Stromtalwiese conversion area

Since 1991 the former association for bird breeders and enthusiasts has maintained an accommodation station for confiscated animals in accordance with the Federal Nature Conservation Act of the State of Hesse. This is used in the fight to ensure compliance with animal and species protection by customs , the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation , public prosecutors and veterinary offices.

One of the largest contiguous stork colonies in Europe with around 90 nests is located on the area of the bird park .

In addition to the park area, the association, supported by the city of Riedstadt and the University of Gießen , successfully created around 10 hectares of land in the Biebesheimer Rheinauen as part of the project for the "testing and development of procedures for renaturation and integrated agricultural use of river valley meadows on the Hessian Upper Rhine" renatured and converted into river valley meadows.
