The bridge with the Nepomuk figure in Obervolkach

The Volkachbrücke Obervolkach connects the two historic parts of the village of Obervolkach in Lower Franconia . The listed road bridge leads over the Volkachbach and is now crossed by the Bürgermeister-Erhard-Straße.

history

Nepomuk figure

The history of the bridge is closely linked to that of the place itself. Obervolkach first developed in the northwest of the Volkachbach. A connection via the brook was not necessary at this early stage. Only with the parish of Obervolkach from the mother church in Volkach and the receipt of its own parish church of St. Nicholas did the river move into the center of the village. The parish church in the east of the brook was first mentioned in 1435. The two districts were connected by a bridge.

From then on, the bridge formed the center of village life in Obervolkach. A story tells that in the Thirty Years War between 1631 and 1634 the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf rode across the bridge and thus brought the village under his occupation. The story, however, can be referred to the realm of legends. In the 18th century a statue of Nepomuk was built on the bridge. The bridge over the Volkachbach is now classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

description

The bridge itself consists of four bays. It has brick abutments and was built as an arch bridge . In the course of the road renewal, the bridge was also renovated in 1997. The 18th century Nepomuk statue is similar to that in Volkach at the Gaibacher Tor . Only the so-called Beffchen was worked out in more detail. The figure is about 1.50 m high and was made of sandstone.
