Volker Böder (born June 20, 1965 in Rotenburg (Wümme) , † September 1, 2012 in Basel ) was a German geodesist , hydrograph and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school, Böder initially completed an apprenticeship as a surveying technician at the Verden land registry from 1985 to 1988 . He then studied surveying at the TU Hannover until 1994 . In 2002 he received his doctorate in engineering under Günter Seeber's department for civil engineering and surveying with a study on high-precision GPS position and attitude determination with special attention to marine applications . In addition, he worked as a research assistant in the field of GPS position determination at the Institute for Earth Surveying, where he mainly worked on the optimization of hydrographic position determination with GPS and calibrationof antenna and station effects on GPS reference stations worked. From May 2003 to June 2005 he worked as a trainee lawyer at the Hanover District Government. Between September and December 2005, Böder took on a professorship for practical geodesy and hydrography in the geomatics department at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences . In January 2006 he accepted a professorship in the same area of responsibility at the HafenCity University Hamburg . There he researched and taught in the areas of marine geodesy, position and height determination , hybrid hydrographic measurements and nautical science, master's degree in geomatics. Böder was the author of numerous scientific articles and research reports. He was also a member of the advisory board of the German Hydrographic Society. V.

Disaster of the survey ship "Level-A"

The Hydrographic Survey Boat Level-A

A special focus of Böder's work was the optimization of the sensors of the hydrographic research vessel Level-A. In August 2012, "Level-A" was busy testing new devices and technologies for measuring the navigation channels in the Rhine on behalf of the Basel City Building and Transport Department in Basel. On August 31, 2012, she collided with a Belgian motor ship on the Rhine and capsized. The crew went overboard. Böder and two of his employees were rescued, but the skipper was initially missing. While the employees survived the accident largely unscathed, the researcher died on September 1, 2012 from his serious injuries.

Volker Böder was married and had two children.
