At the end of the 1970s, Volker Hildebrandt's work can be classified as conceptual art ; The means of language are used to deal with space and time. At the beginning of the 1980s Hildebrandt turned increasingly to the electronic media of television, computer and video text (BTX), later also to video , in order to critically review the image creation processes typical of these devices in his art. Dealing with the structure and production methods of media images is an essential aspect of his art. The perception and reception of media icons from film , art , sport and politics also make up a large part of his artistic work.

After the introduction of the BTX in Germany in 1983, Hildebrandt was the first German artist to use the new medium to transmit an immaterial exhibition of specially designed works of art ( Bildstören - Hildebrandt , 1983; BTX Dance , 1983; Hotel Rasputin , 1989) and thus to use it simultaneously accessible to many recipients regardless of their location.

In 1983, Volker Hildebrandt also dealt with the phenomenon of image disturbance on television for the first time , in the indeterminacy of which all imaginable images are contained as a possibility ( BTX exhibition , 1985). Hildebrandt has since translated the drifting snow of the white, gray and black dots into pastose , tangible, tangible paintings, with which he canvases ( Pictory exhibitions , 1994), objects (TV Baby, 1998) and spatial installations ( Rosa Raum , 1985; Rosa Schnecke , 1986; Rosa Zimmer , 1997). The inclusion of language again plays a role, which is particularly evident when working with daily newspapers (exhib. Spektuleer , 1991): on the newspaper pages covered with shimmering dots, only the left-blank headlines provide an ironic comment on the otherwise empty application of paint.

For Hildebrandt, the encrypted pictures of pay TV in the 1990s are comparable to the phenomenon of picture disturbance , which only show what is shown in a blurred manner and thus, unlike conventional TV pictures, stimulate the viewer's imagination, especially when coded transmission of porn films ( Kiss , 1998; Moodoo , 1999).

Volker Hildebrandt continues the preoccupation with the visual construction of perception by the mass media in the series of VIPs . Sequences of film or video recordings of famous stars, splintered into their individual parts, reveal the process of image creation on the one hand, and on the other hand - in a small format lined up in a grid - result in a completely new image that can no longer be deciphered from afar. Conversely, Hildebrandt, for example, transfers the photographic portraits of the German Chancellors (2005) into pointillist gray paintings that only produce a recognizable image from a distance.

Since 2000, Volker Hildebrandt has also been working with and in the media film ( Kill Bill Still , 2007) and video ( M dna , 2002). In 2008 he submitted an application to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to include the phenomenon of image disturbance in the list of goods worthy of protection and to declare it a world cultural heritage.
