Volker Rittner

Volker Rittner (* 1946 in Braunschweig ) is a German sports sociologist and university professor . He is considered one of the nestors of German sport sociology.

Life

Rittner passed his Abitur in Hamburg in 1965 and then studied sociology, history and German at the University of Hamburg . In 1971 his doctoral thesis (subject: "Cultural contacts and social learning in the Middle Ages: crusades in the light of a medieval biography") was accepted at the University of Hamburg. From 1973 Rittner was a research assistant at the Philipps University of Marburg , in 1977 he completed his habilitation and then worked as a professor. In 1979 Rittner moved to the German Sport University Cologne (DSHS), where he took up a professorship for sport sociology and was head of the institute for sport sociology until the beginning of his retirement in 2011. From 1999 to 2003 he was Vice-Rector for Research and Young Academics at the DSHS.

His research interests included the subject areas of sport and society, structural change in sport in complex societies, sociology of the body, health promotion and prevention, municipal sport development planning, control problems of the sport system, youth work and sport, career prospects for sport academics in clubs, volunteer work in sport and trendy sports.
