history

The first own bank building was built on Rekumer Str.
New building in 1959, the former main office on Merschstr.

On December 16, 1883, 53 farmers, merchants and artisans founded the Haltern Savings and Loan Association with unlimited liability under the chairmanship of the landlord Wilhelm Zurhausen. It was founded in Haus Ostendorf in the municipality of Lippramsdorf. The Volksbank Haltern eG was founded by medium-sized entrepreneurs to meet the credit needs of the domestic economy. They received no credit from other banks because, according to the opinion of the time, they were not considered creditworthy. The difficult economic situation prompted the fathers of the bank to do something themselves to alleviate the need. The founders elected to the first board of directors: Chairman - Post holder Robert Koch, Deputy - Economist August Hubbert, Economist Johann Schulte Uphusen, Economist Johann Hubbert gt. Budde and Economist Heinrich Lewing. The first supervisory board consisted of: Chairman - Economist Wilhelm Zurhausen, Deputy Economist Heinrich Hagemann, Heinrich Hubbert gt. Korte, Economist Heinrich Thier, Economist Theodor Deinken, factory owner Louis Wiesmann, Economist Heinrich Wessel, Rendant Fritz Kolck and Economist Heinrich König. In the founding minutes you can read that savings deposits could only be accepted up to an amount of 10,000 DM at four percent interest. Members had to pay an entrance fee of one mark and take over a share of three marks. The first cash register was in the Kolck house on the market square.

At first, the business of the savings and loan association developed only slowly. In the first ten years until 1894, the number of members rose from 53 to 183 and the reserve fund rose to 5,148.33 marks. After the death of Fritz Kolck, the general assembly on October 8th, 1893 elected Franz Pohlmann as his successor. He led the savings and loan association into a successful development phase. In the following 20 years until 1914 the number of members increased from 183 to 730, the reserves reached a height of 49,601 marks. The first own house was built in 1930. The bank building opened its doors in April 1931.

After the Second World War, the ticket office was rebuilt and could be used again in 1945. In 1947, the savings and loan association was renamed to Spar- und Autovermietung eGmuH Haltern and in 1976 to Volksbank Haltern eG. The first branch was opened in Sythen in 1957 and in 1959, just in time for the 75th anniversary, the main office at Merschstr. built. In 1972 the Volksbank established further branches in Flaesheim and in 1976 in Hullern and Lavesum as well as on Rekumer Str. In 1978 Volksbank Lippramsdorf merged with Volksbank Haltern. In 2001 the new main office was opened at the roundabout at Münsterstrasse. built. For its 125th anniversary, Volksbank was given the address “Raiffeisenplatz 1”. Today Volksbank Haltern eG has seven branches and one self-service branch in the city. All branches have been renovated over the years and adapted to current banking standards.
