history

1868–1906 Pforzheim advance payment association

On January 19, 1868, the advance payment association was founded in the large town hall in Pforzheim. The advance payment association for the city and district of Pforzheim started its activities on March 1, 1868 in Baumstrasse D 188 in Pforzheim. At the end of August 1868, after half a year of its existence, the advance payment association had loaned 374 members and 34,715 guilders. In the general assembly of June 8, 1874, the entry of the advance association, which had been founded as a personal association according to its first statute, was decided in the cooperative register, which has now also been introduced in Baden under Reich law. "Advance Association Pforzheim Registered Cooperative " was now the official name. The number of members rose from 1,274 in 1871 to 3,562 in 1876. In the three years from 1872 to 1874 alone, 4,473 advances of 1,529,000 guilders had to be granted and 8,481 loans of 2,158,000 guilders had to be extended. A further 4,265 advances of almost three and a half million marks were made in 1875 and 1876, and at the same time 11,340 loans over 6 million marks were extended. The association acquired its own bank building in June 1892 with the house at Zerrennerstraße 27. In 1895, current account transactions were first introduced at the cooperative.

1907–1917 Pforzheimer commercial bank

A new milestone was set on April 22, 1907 with the transformation of the Pforzheim Advance Association into the Pforzheimer Gewerbebank. The general meeting of July 17, 1908 approved 90,000 marks for the construction of a three-story bank building in place of the rear building at Zerrennerstrasse 27. In 1913 the cooperative had 2,982 members, at the end of the war in 1918 there were still 2,264 members. In 1916, the year of the war, Pforzheim's commercial bank was in seventh place among the commercial banks in Baden in terms of total assets.

1918–1939 Pforzheimer Gewerbebank eGmbH

In the general assembly of March 21, 1918, the conversion of the Pforzheim commercial bank into a registered cooperative with limited liability was decided. Since the end of the war was not yet in sight, the Supervisory Board carried out the formalities in August 1918 which, after a one-year blocking period, aimed to transfer the cooperative to limited liability. The new status came into effect on September 8, 1919. The statutes required for the Pforzheimer Gewerbebank eGmbH had already been approved by the general assembly on March 20, 1919. At the end of 1924 the balance sheet total of the Pforzheimer Gewerbebank was 1,242,000 Reichsmarks, while the turnover reached 44.3 million Reichsmarks. The number of members this year was 2,905. Also in 1924, today's Volksbank branch in Wildbad was opened as a branch. In the commercial bank's headquarters in Pforzheim, the scope of business continued to grow and in 1927 led to the decision to introduce automated bookkeeping.

1940 Volksbank Pforzheim eGmbH

At the 71st Annual General Meeting on April 10, 1940, it was decided to change the company to “Volksbank Pforzheim eGmbH”. On May 31, 1943, the Landesbank für Haus- und Grundbesitz, which in 1939 had taken over the private banking house Bloch founded in 1868, was merged by mutual agreement. In the 75th year of the Volksbank Pforzheim's existence, its balance sheet total increased to 19.8 million Reichsmarks with 1693 members. Despite the war, the following year, 1944, the balance sheet volume rose to 24.3 million Reichsmarks, while the number of members was 1765.

On February 23, 1945, British bombers reduced most of Pforzheim to rubble and ashes within twenty minutes. On this fateful night, the Volksbank buildings in Zerrennerstraße 27 and Dillsteiner Straße 3 near the Roßbrücke were completely destroyed. After the city was destroyed, Pforzheims Volksbank found poor emergency accommodation in various properties in the Brötzingen district, which was largely spared by the bombs, and still had its branch in Wildbad as a refuge. On September 5, 1945, Volksbank Pforzheim took over the Ländlichen Kreditverein Brötzingen, founded in May 1890, which had been called Kreditverein und Sparkasse Brötzingen since 1920 and Volksbank Brötzingen eGmbH since 1940. On September 27, 1948, the Volksbank celebrated the opening of its premises at Leopoldstrasse 6. It was the first bank in Pforzheim to reopen its main business in the middle of the still completely destroyed city. Since 1948, when at the same time the export relations of the Goldstadt revived, Volksbank Pforzheim has also acted as a foreign trade bank. The balance sheet total of Volksbank Pforzheim at the end of 1949 was around 7.1 million marks, which has tripled since the currency reform. On October 1, 1950, a paying office was opened in Hirsauer Strasse for the population of the Dillweißstein district . According to the balance sheet total, Pforzheims Volksbank was in eleventh place among the Volksbanks in the Federal Republic of Germany at the end of 1950.

In March 1951 it was possible to buy the property at Westliche-Karl-Friedrich-Straße 53 in order to build a bank building on it. To promote the idea of savings, the first savings association in Pforzheim was founded on May 23, 1951 and entered in the register of associations. The following years led to a considerable expansion of the branch offices. On December 31, 1952, Volksbank Pforzheim took over the previously independent Volksbank Wiernsheim eGmbH. A branch was opened in the up-and-coming industrial city of Mühlacker on March 23, 1953. In January 1954, Volksbank Neuenbürg , founded in 1867, was taken over. The network of branch offices was consolidated again the following year; on March 30, 1955, Calmbach was given a pay office, and on December 7, 1955 a new base was opened in Niefern . The new banking house at Westliche-Karl-Friedrich-Strasse 53 was inaugurated on December 21, 1953. In November 1962 an office was opened on the market square in Birkenfeld . In 1964 Tiefenbronn got a new Volksbank branch. In Pforzheim itself, the opening of the Nordstadt branch was a major step towards decentralizing and relieving the main business. Another two branches were opened in 1965; one in May in Höfen and the other in December in Hauptstrasse in Eutingen.

In April 1966 the Auerbrücke branch opened in Pforzheim and in December of the same year in Ispringen. Another three branches were opened in 1967, namely on March 3rd in the garden city of Arlinger, on July 14th in Lienzinger Strasse in Mühlacker, the last on July 28th in Ötisheim. Pforzheims Volksbank exceeded the hundred million mark for its total assets for the first time in 1961. With total assets of 104 million marks at the end of 1961, Volksbank Pforzheim now ranks third among the German Volksbanks after Frankfurt and Berlin. The hundredth business year, which ended on December 31, 1967, closed with a balance sheet total of 245 million marks. Sales had grown to 5.6 billion. The number of members was 12,600.
