Volkssternwarte Hannover
The Volkssternwarte Hannover is part of the non-profit association Volkssternwarte Geschwister Herschel Hannover e. V. operated observatory . It is located in Hanover on the 89 m high Lindener Berg and there on the roof terrace of the elevated water tank completed in 1878 .
history
In 1947 amateur astronomers founded an astronomical working group under the direction of Rudolf Hase . In 1968, a public observatory was built on the Lindener Berg as one of the highest points in the city. The site of a waterworks in the Linden-Süd district with the elevated water tank as the highest point was particularly suitable for this . Initially, Hase's private telescopes served as the basis. The association that emerged from the working group in memory of the siblings Wilhelm and Karoline Herschel , two astronomers from Hanover , has had its current name since 1986 .
The Hanover observatory regularly offers public sky observations and astronomical lectures. The observatory has well over 1000 visitors a year.
Instruments
The main instruments of the observatory are housed in two domes. A 20 cm FH refractor with a 3 m focal length is generally used for public tours . A 28 cm Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a focal length of 2.8 m and an apochromatic Zeiss refractor with an opening of 13 cm, which are equipped with a computer-controlled mount, are available for observation and astrophotography . A flat-field camera with an opening of almost 20 cm is also used for photography. If the number of visitors is high, a Cassegrain-Maksutov reflector with an opening of 18 cm will be installed next to the domes . Within the association, the most powerful instrument in the observatory is used from time to time, a portable Dobsonian telescope with a 35 cm opening. A 9 cm refractor with an H-alpha filter and a white light filter for the large refractor are available for observing the sun .
