Surname

Volzum is mentioned several times in old documents, starting with Volkessem (1153) via Volxhem (1192), Volcsem (1226), Volzin (1251), Volzem (1265), Voltsem (1294) to Volzum (since the end of the Reformation). The name of the village goes back to the Old High German word fole , which means people. Another interpretation assumes that it was a home of a Folki or Volki .

The ending "-um" means something like "-heim".

history

Volzum was first mentioned in a document in 1153. The church building comes from the Romanesque . In the Thirty Years' War the farmers were no longer able to pay taxes, so in 1646 soldiers looted the village and the church treasure.

In the 18th century there was a parish widow's house , 3 farms , 7 half- span farms and 8 Kothöfe in the village ; a total of 18 fireplaces with 101 inhabitants. After the Second World War , the place took in numerous refugees and evacuated people, while the population doubled to about 400. As refugees moved away, this number decreased to 290 people by the mid-1990s. Due to the designation of building areas in the west and east of the town in the 1990s, the number of inhabitants rose again to just over 400 people to this day (2016).

On March 1, 1974, Volzum was incorporated into the new municipality of Sickte.

The village has had a village house since 2001, which is the meeting point for local associations and groups.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of Volzum is yellow on a blue background, consisting of a yellow rafter between three yellow wings. It ties in with the coat of arms of the local noble family von Volzum. The colors blue and yellow were chosen to remind of the long history of the place in the Braunschweiger Land .
