A bishop's storehouse is a social facility of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that is used to collect and distribute goods to those in need. Basic food and important household goods are stored in the storehouse. The term can also be used to refer to any talent, ability, financial aid, and time invested that is used by Church members for those in need.

As of January 2010, the number of storehouses in use worldwide was 138.

origin

Newel K. Whitney's store in Kirtland.

The idea of storehouses stems from a revelation to Joseph Smith on February 9, 1831. He received the revelation: “Therefore the remainder shall be kept in my storehouse so that it may be given to the poor and needy, as the councilor gave the Church and the bishop and his counsel. ”The first storehouse opened in Newel K. Whitney's store in Kirtland .

use

Most of the goods in the storehouses are purchased through fasting donations or come from Church farms. The storehouse staff are volunteers or missionaries . The storehouse can be accessed by those in need through the local bishop or the local Relief Society general government. It doesn't matter whether the needy are members of the Church or not. The bishop makes decisions about whether the person will be helped and consults with the local Relief Society leadership about what exactly will be given to the person. Usually the needy is asked how he can work in the value of the product given him.

The storehouses are not commercial stores and the goods are not normally sold to the public.

Buildings and resources

There are buildings around the world that serve as storehouses. In areas where there are no buildings for it, the bishop can use the money from fasting donations to procure food. This food is then distributed to those in need. This is also the procedure if the needy has an intolerance to food that is available in the storehouse. The bishop can also use the talents of his parishioners to help those in need.
