The Vossloh DE 18 is a diesel-electric powered locomotive for heavy shunting and mainline service with the Bo'Bo ' wheel arrangement. It is the first locomotive from the former MaK factory in Kiel since production of the DE 1002 was discontinued in 1993. About 60% of the components of the DE 18 are congruent with those of the diesel-hydraulic variant G 18. According to the manufacturer, the construction of the vehicle complies with the crash standard EN 15227 .

In DE 18, the MTU 12 V 4000 R 43 / R84 engine is used. These diesel engines produce up to 1800 kW and have a nominal speed of 1800 min −1 . They meet the requirements of the EU / 2004/26 Stage IIIA emissions standard and are prepared for Stage IIIB. For this purpose, they can be equipped with a soot particle filter at the customer's request . The noise emissions meet the requirements of TSI Noise. The power is transmitted AC / AC by means of a wheel set-selective control. The system is equipped with IGBT converters. The machines generate a starting tractive effort of a maximum of 300 kN. The power of the electrodynamic brake is a maximum of 1450 kW.

With a vehicle weight of 80 to 90 tons, the machines have a wheel set load of 20.0 to 22.5 tons. Depending on the equipment, you can carry 3000 to 4000 liters of fuel. In addition to the standard gauge version with a gauge of 1435 mm, a wide gauge version with a gauge of 1520 mm is also available. The wheel sets have a diameter of 1,000 mm, which can be traversed up to 920 mm. The smallest passable arc radius is given as 55 meters. The DE 18 is 17,000 mm long over the buffers, its greatest height is 4310 mm, the greatest width 3080 mm.

Approval according to TSI has existed since 2014. A SmartHybrid variant is currently being tested, and approval for commercial use is planned for 2020.

Buyers and use of the locomotives

Vossloh delivered the first two machines manufactured on behalf of customers to BASF. The oldest DE 18 manufactured before with the vehicle number 92 80 4185 001-9 D-VL can currently be found in Völklingen in Saarland, where it is used with SaarRail lettering over the Vossloh logos on the cab walls in the area of the Völklinger Hütte. Most of the machines, with the exception of those assigned to Vossloh itself in the vehicle registration register , were delivered to Eiffage and the goods division of the Luxembourg railroad CFL Cargo , which each acquired 11 machines. Eight locomotives went to the French SNCF Geodis subsidiary AKIEM and seven to Europorte .

The Westfälische Landeseisenbahn WLE and its sister company Regionalverkehr Münsterland RVM each procured one vehicle in 2018.

Other railway companies each acquired smaller numbers. The two youngest DE 18s built in 2019 were taken over by Beacon Rail . Between 2010 and 2019, Vossloh produced a total of more than 70 copies of the DE 18.

In accordance with the design specified by the manufacturer, the machines can be found in France, Luxembourg and Germany, for each of which there is a national approval, in freight transport as well as heavy shunting and shunting services.
