The Vulcano class is a class of supply ships built by Fincantieri . To date, a total of seven ships are planned, including three for the Italian Navy as a replacement for three units of the Stromboli and Etna classes and four of the Jacques Chevallier class for the French Navy as successors for five suppliers of the Durance class .

history

The suppliers were designed by Fincantieri under the working name Logistic Support Ship (LSS) on the basis of requirements and plans of the Italian admiralty staff. The Italian Ministry of Defense commissioned the first ship in 2015 for 346 million euros. In February 2016, construction of the two ship modules began in Riva Trigoso and Castellammare di Stabia . The front ship module was launched in Castellammare on April 10, 2017 and was then towed to Muggiano near La Spezia . There, in May 2018, it was joined with the production block coming from Riva Trigoso (which was somewhat longer than the original plan). The ship was christened and subsequently launched ( floating dock ) on June 22nd, 2018 in Muggiano.

During the construction of the type ship Vulcano , the French navy showed interest in the project. Just like Italy via OCCAR , it ordered four suppliers in a slightly modified version at the beginning of 2019 as part of its Batiments Ravitailleurs de Force (BRF) project . The order volume was 1.7 billion euros. Most of the modifications are to be adopted for the other Italian ships. The French ships are expected to be delivered from the end of 2022. Brazil has observer status.

On the night of July 22nd to 23rd, 2018, there was a fire on board the type ship Vulcano , which caused serious damage. At the time the fire broke out, no one was on board and there were no injuries. The ship was repaired in the Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia, and the navigating bridge and other parts of the superstructure were rebuilt. The commissioning scheduled for September 2019 had to be postponed by a year.

General

The 193 or 194 meter long and a maximum of around 27,000 or 31,000 tons displacing double-hulled ships of the Vulcano or Jacques Chevallier class supply fleet units on the high seas with operating materials , consumables , provisions and ammunition . The transport capacity is around 9,000 tons of marine diesel, 3,700 tons of aviation fuel, 800 tons of drinking water, 220 tons of ammunition and 30,000 food rations. The transshipment takes place at four RAS stations . The ships can also be used as a hospital ship and workshop ship and take on a staff to lead a fleet. In addition to a helipad, there is an on-board hangar for two helicopters. The French units are slightly larger than the Vulcano , the main reason being the higher demand for aircraft fuel of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle compared to the Italian carrier Cavour .

Ships of the class

Vulcano class (Italy)

The bow sections are prefabricated in Castellammare di Stabia, the rest of the production block in Riva Trigoso, the assembly and equipment takes place in Muggiano. The type ship and thus the ship class are named after the Mediterranean island of Vulcano and the local volcano of the same name .

The bow sections are prefabricated in Castellammare di Stabia, otherwise construction takes place at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, which is controlled by Fincantieri . The type ship and thus the French lower class are named after Jacques Chevallier, a lead engineer in the development of the French nuclear forces, in particular the development of the redoutable class .
