The forest nature reserve with gorges between Wartburg and Hohe Sonne, designated in 2015, is located in the area of the independent city of Eisenach and the municipality of Gerstungen ( Wartburgkreis ) in Thuringia . It had previously existed as a nature reserve Wartburg - Hohe Sonne since 1961 .

location

The only nature reserve in the Eisenach urban area extends south of the Eisenach core city in the natural area 1.3.1 Northwestern Thuringian Forest . A small part of the area is in the district of Wolfsburg-Unkeroda in the Gerstungen community. The protected area lies on both sides of Bundesstraße 19 , which crosses the ridge of the Thuringian Forest here in the section between Wilhelmsthal and Eisenach . The federal highway 84 runs northwest of the area . The UNESCO World Heritage Site Wartburg is located in the NSG , at the intersection of the B 19 and the Rennsteig is the eponymous Hohe Sonne .

meaning

The area is characterized by mixed deciduous forests (especially grove-beech forest, grove-oak mixed forest and woodruff beech forest), as they are typical for the north-western Thuringian forest. It includes a number of important geotopes , including the nationally known Dragon Gorge .

Protection status

An area of 586.1 hectares was already designated in 1961 with the NSG no. 29 as NSG Wartburg - Hohesonne after the GDR applicable law for the conservation and maintenance of native Nature (Nature Protection Act) reported.

In 2015, the area was enlarged to 788 hectares and the name was changed to forests with gorges between Wartburg and Hohe Sonne with a new protected area ordinance.
