William Brian Keith Holmes

Holmes is an amateur palaeontologist and was a cattle farmer like his father who had a farm first in Berowra and then in Raleigh, New South Wales . He later owned a farm in Wellington himself. After the death of his wife in 1998, he handed the farm over to his children and devoted himself entirely to palaeobotany (where he attended institutes around the world) and nature conservation.

For over 40 years he collected Gondwana plant fossils on a large scale , especially from the middle Triassic quarries of Nymboida in northern New South Wales. At that time, the fossil plants grew in a swamp area from which coal deposits also formed. He donated his collection to the Australian Museum and classified it as a volunteer research fellow at the University of New England at Armidale . He made around 80 initial descriptions and a series of articles in which he describes the over 125 plant species that were found in Nymboida.

He has been a Fellow of the Linnean Society of New South Wales since 2005.

He is married to Heidi Marguerite Anderson (* 1944 in Johannisburg, born Schwyzer), who holds a doctorate (University of Witwatersrand 1977), who works on Triassic plants in South Africa (Molteno Formation) (and who, with her husband John M. Anderson, put together an extensive collection) , Is a contributor to the Bernard Price Institute for Paleontology at the University of Witwatersrand and is co-author of part of the Holmes series of articles on the Nymboida plant fossils.
