WayV ( Chinese  威神 V , Pinyin WēiShén V ) is a Chinese boy band founded by SM Entertainment . It is the fourth and so far first non- Korean-speaking subgroup of the South Korean boy group NCT . The group consists of seven members: Kun, Ten, Winwin, Lucas, Xiaojun, Hendery and Yangyang.

On August 13, 2018, SM announced a Chinese boy group for the first time via NCT's Twitter account under the project name NCT China. On December 31, 2018, it was announced that the seven members would debut in January 2019 under the Label V operated exclusively in China by SM Entertainment as WayV. On January 17, 2019, the group made their debut with their single album The Vision. She then won the Best New Asian Artist (China) Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2019 .

history

2016–2018: Formation

All seven WayV members originally belonged to the SM Rookies , a training team from SM Entertainment. In January 2016, the founder and producer of SM, Lee Soo-man , announced plans with NCT for a new boy band with several different units that would be distributed to various cities around the world.

Ten made his debut with the first subgroup, NCT U , on April 9, 2016. Kun was part of the Chinese version of the NCT U song "Without You", which was released on April 10, 2016, which was not, however, his official debut with the group was rated. Winwin made his debut with NCT 127 , the second subgroup, on July 7, 2016. Kun and Lucas were announced as new members of NCT on January 31, 2018. Lucas and Winwin made their debut with NCT U on February 22, 2018. SM announced a Chinese boy band for the first time on August 13, 2018 via NCT's Twitter account under the project name NCT China.

On December 31, 2018, SM Entertainment announced WayV ("威神 V") through the group's official Weibo account. The group consists of seven members - the four existing NCT members: Kun, Winwin, Ten and Lucas - and the three new members who were previously part of the SM rookies: Hendery, Xiaojun and Yangyang. The group belongs to Label V, which is operated exclusively in China by SM Entertainment. It is a subgroup of NCT, although it is not advertised as an NCT group. Some journalists suggested that WayV's distancing from NCT was due to strained relations between China and South Korea. Even so, SM Entertainment A&R CEO Chris Lee confirmed WayV as the China-based entity of NCT.

2019: Debut with The Vision , Take Off and Take Over The Moon

On January 17th, WayV released their first digital EP, The Vision , which featured a Chinese version of NCT 127's song "Regular" as the lead single.

On May 1st, WayV announced their first EP, Take Off . It was released on May 9th.

In August and September 2019, WayV released their first reality show, Dream Plan, which consisted of 12 episodes and was uploaded to Youku and Youtube .

On October 29th, the group released their second EP, Take Over The Moon , with the title track "Moonwalk". The songs "King of Hearts" and "We go nanana" were partly written by Hendery and Yangyang. WayV is the first Chinese group to make it - with Take Over The Moon for the second time - with a released album at number one on the iTunes Worldwide Albums Chart. They made their first comeback with the album during the MBC Musics Show Champion on October 30th, where they performed with "Moonwalk". It was the group's first appearance in Korea. On November 5th, WayV released an English language version of "Love Talk" as the second single from the EP.

The group then went on a promotional tour of China, South Korea and Thailand .

2020: Awaken the World

WayV was the second group from SM Entertainment to give a live online concert in 2020. It was organized by SM Entertainment in collaboration with Naver and was part of the first online live concert series Beyond LIVE . The live concert called "WayV - Beyond the Vision", which was WayV's first ever concert, took place on May 3rd. WayV presented songs from their previous albums as well as new songs such as the single Turn Back Time, which was released on June 9th with their first studio album Awaken the World.

Cooperations

WayV had collaborations with several brands including Skechers , Carslan, Cigalong Beauty, and Maeil Barista Rules. The group has also featured on the covers of magazines such as Nylon China, Harper's Bazaar China , InStyle, and Men's Uno.
