WIMA Spezialvertriebischer Electronic Components is one of the last German manufacturers of passive electronic components, especially plastic film capacitors , paper radio interference suppression capacitors and double-layer capacitors . In the field of film capacitors for professional applications, WIMA is the leading supplier on the world market .
The acronym WIMA comes from either WI lhelm Wester MA nn or WI lhelm Westermann, MA nnheim.

The company was founded in 1948 in Unna by Wilhelm Westermann. After founding the company, Wilhelm Westermann succeeded in establishing his company as one of the leading manufacturers of capacitors alongside Siemens , Roederstein and Valvo, thanks in particular to the explosive growth of the radio and television industry in post-war Germany . In particular, the founder's close cooperation with Max Grundig contributed to establishing consumer electronics as a mass product in Europe in the post-war years and establishing and promoting Germany's supremacy in this area at the time . Almost all well-known manufacturers in the radio and television industry such as Grundig , Telefunken , SABA , Nordmende , Loewe , Metz , Philips and Dual built WIMA capacitors into their devices.

With manufacturing and wrapping techniques that were new at the time, the lacquered, brownish “Wima caramel candies” in particular became synonymous with film capacitors. Later, in the 1970s, WIMA launched radial, cup-shaped film capacitors with a grid dimension of 5 mm for automated assembly technology for the first time, and with this development made a significant contribution to cost-effective device production.

Since the death of Wilhelm Westermann in 1981, the WIMA group of companies has been managed by his son Wolfgang Westermann as the sole owner. Wolfgang Westermann studied electrical engineering in Karlsruhe and Munich with degrees as a graduate engineer and graduate industrial engineer. He pushed the technological development of the film capacitors and regularly, z. B. in the trade press, new products and technologies.

With the decline in consumer electronics production in Europe from the end of the 1980s, WIMA succeeded in adapting the product range to the growing industrial and professional market. In parallel to the development of switching transistors and thyristors in the semiconductor sector, the company developed u. a. special snubber and GTO film capacitors for the growing demand in power electronics . This enabled WIMA to open up new markets in order to be able to export passive components from Germany worldwide.

Today, the company is a quality leader in the capacitor industry, which is regularly proven by corresponding customer ratings, awards and certifications. The symbol of this philosophy is the slogan: "Quality is manufactured and cannot be tested in a product."

In terms of environmental protection , WIMA relies on recyclable materials and on the reduction of packaging material. An energy and water recovery system has been installed in all production facilities for efficient use and conservation of resources.

The company's headquarters are in Mannheim . Sales and the central laboratory are located here. Plastic film capacitors and radio interference suppression paper capacitors are manufactured at the production sites in Aurich and Unna . The R&D center and the production of the supercaps (double-layer capacitors) are located in Berlin . The company employs around 350 people.
