The WS51200 is a heavy eight-axle Chinese truck (16 × 12) mainly used as a military vehicle . The vehicle has been in production since 2011/2012.

Vehicle history

In the mid-2000s, the mechanical engineering company Wanshan Special Vehicle began developing heavy truck models in the Chinese city of Wanshan , which are intended for both civil and military purposes. Based on the multi-axle products of the Belarusian manufacturer Minski Sawod Koljosnych Tjagatschei , the WS51200 was created, which is presented by the manufacturer on its homepage as a civilian transporter with eight axles.

technology

The WS51200 is 20.11 meters long, 3.35 meters wide and 3.35 meters high. A six-cylinder four-stroke in-line diesel engine of the type KTTA19 C700 , supplied by the US manufacturer Cummins, serves as the drive . With a displacement of 19 liters , it develops 700 hp (522 kW) and has a maximum torque of 2730 Nm, which it achieves at 1400 revolutions per minute. It complies with the Euro 2 emissions standard and has a turbocharger and charge air cooling. The truck has a mechanical ZF - automatic type WSK440 + 16S251 . To minimize the turning circle, the front and rear three axles are steerable. The four-door driver's cab offers space for the driver and front passenger as well as the crew. While this type of truck is marketed for civilian applications such as the transportation of wood, coal and fuel, Wanshan produces other models, such as the WS2400 , which are used as mobile launch pads by the People's Liberation Army .

Export to North Korea

The truck model gained international attention in the 2010s when Western military analysts identified the WS51200 as the transport and launch vehicle for North Korean ballistic nuclear missiles of the Hwasong-13 and Hwasong-14 types . Although the export of military technology to North Korea is sanctioned, at least eight WS51200 made it to the neighboring Chinese state in 2011. Officially, the vehicles were delivered as timber trucks to circumvent the UN sanctions imposed on North Korea. In North Korea, the chassis have been expanded to include the corresponding superstructures that can be used as a mobile launch pad. A modified version of the WS51200 is used on the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile . It is assumed here that the vehicle was only extended by an additional ninth axle in order to be able to transport the longer missile.
