Classification of economic sectors
The Classification of Economic Activities (1961 to 2002 Classification of Economic Activities ) is in the German official statistics common classification of economic activities by the Federal Statistical Office .
history
The current version WZ 2008 is the revised version of WZ 2003, which in turn is based on WZ 93. WZ stands for branch of industry (s) , the figures for the year in which the Federal Statistical Office published these classifications. For some statistics, these previous versions were still in use for a long time.
WZ 2008
The WZ 2008 system has been in effect since January 1, 2008. Various official statistics were only gradually converted to the new system. B. the employment statistics from 2009, but the national accounts only in the context of the 2011 revision, which was published on September 1, 2011. In order for the employment statistics to show valid data earlier in accordance with the new system, cases that could not be converted accurately by machine were checked in 2008 by the company number service of the Federal Employment Agency .
According to Article 8 of Regulation (EC) No. 1893/2006 , the WZ 2008 is based on the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community (NACE) Rev. 2, and differs considerably from its previous versions :
- The structural level of the subsections from WZ 2003 (2 letters) has been completely discarded.
- The number of departments, groups and classes has increased significantly.
- The number of subclasses has been significantly reduced.
- The meaning of the individual codes has been changed significantly at all hierarchical levels (e.g. section C in WZ 2003 means "Mining and quarrying", but in WZ 2008 it means " Manufacturing ").
The WZ 2008 comprises 21 economic sectors:

WZ 2003 and WZ 93 differ in many respects from the older WZ 79. This fact does not allow longer time comparisons with statistical data structured according to economic systems, or only to a very limited extent, but it does make international comparisons easier.
The classification is structured hierarchically:
Labelling | Hierarchy levels |
---|---|
1 letter | 17 economic sections |
2 letters | 31 subsections |
2 digits | 60 economic departments |
