William Gilbert ("WG") Grace (born July 18, 1848 in Downend , † October 23, 1915 in Mottingham , Kent ) was an English cricketer . Grace was instrumental in the development of cricket. Especially the batting technique was modernized by him.

Career

WG Grace played first-class cricket for 44 years (from 1865 to 1908). During this time he played 870 first-class matches. He was a very good all-rounder who scored over 54,000 runs and more than 2,800 wickets . In total, he managed to achieve at least 1000 runs in 28 seasons. Besides himself, only Frank Woolley succeeded in this . Grace was the first player to reach 100 Centuries (at least 100 runs) in first-class cricket. He also achieved the first two triple centuries in the history of first-class cricket.

For the English team, WG Grace took part in 22 encounters in test cricket between 1880 and 1899 , in which he scored a total of 1098 runs.

Honors

In 1896 he was voted Wisden Cricketer of the Year . He is still one of only three players, along with Jack Hobbs and Plum Warner , who have been honored to be voted "Wisden Cricketer of the Year" on their own. In 1963 he was chosen by the editors of the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack to one of the "Six giants of the Wisden century". In 2009, WG Grace was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
