The Waggonhalle cultural center is a socio-cultural center in Marburg , where around 200 to 250 events take place annually, which, according to its own information, attract around 35,000 visitors.
The cultural center began operations in 1996 in a former railway building that gave it its name and consists of a performance room with 99 seats and a rehearsal room of around 40 m², as well as the "Rotkehlchen" bar and the "Waggonhalle" conference center. The Waggonhalle's program was initially mainly focused on theater and was expanded over the years to include events from the fields of dance , performance , music , improvisation , clown theater , cabaret , variety , literature , wrestling and children's theater . However, theater events are still a focus of the cultural offering. In-house productions from the in-house theater GegenStand alternate with productions by groups from the region and guest performances from the German-speaking and international cultural scene.
Organizational and administrative work at the Waggonhalle cultural center was initially done primarily on a voluntary basis by the GegenStand theater ensemble. From 1999 a personal, financial and legal separation of the previously jointly supported areas was made, so that meanwhile the theater group GegenStand and the cultural center Waggonhalle exist as independent sponsoring associations, each of which forms half of the program. The Rotkehlchen pub, which is also located in the wagon hall, and the Waggonhalle conference center are both organizationally and economically independent companies with which the wagon hall works closely. The wagon hall covers the ongoing operating costs from entrance fees, public subsidies, sponsoring and donations.
