Elections to the Federal National Council in the United Arab Emirates in 2006

The 2006 elections to the Federal National Council of the United Arab Emirates began for the first time in UAE history in December 2006 .

Electoral process

The elections for the Federal National Council (FNC) were held on the following dates:

20 members are elected for the FNC, which has 40 seats. The others are appointed by the governments of the respective emirates. The government also appoints 6,689 voters, 1,189 of them women.

Result

The first woman to win a seat on the FNC is Dr. Amal Abdullah Juma Karam al-Qubaisi.

The seats to be elected are distributed among the Emirates as follows:

  • 4 seats for Abu Dhabi
  • 4 seats for Dubai
  • 3 seats for Sharjah
  • 3 seats for Ras al-Khaimah
  • 2 seats for Fujairah
  • 2 seats for Umm al-Qaiwain
  • 2 seats for Ajman

The turnout in Abu Dhabi was 60.2 percent with 3,630 registered voters on the electoral roll. In Fujairah, the turnout was 80 percent.
