Signal station Bankeck near St. Goar with pilot museum

A Wahrschau (from Low German: Warning , from Middle Low German warschuwinge = warning , compare Dutch waarschuwen = to warn ) is a fixed light signal point or warning device, especially in inland navigation .

On the Rhine there is a true show on the Middle Rhine at the Loreley . Since the river bend, the narrow passage and the mountains mean that neither a direct view nor VHF radio is possible for navigation on the Rhine , the skippers traveling upstream are informed by light signals whether they are allowed to sail or not. There are different character combinations for different ship lengths; individual, short ships are indicated by a bar, groups of ships or large ships with several. The boatmen see this information at several points along a 7 km stretch. They are controlled by the Oberwesel district control center . Rhine pilots have become dispensable on this route.

On the Elbe there is a veritable show on the Magdeburg cathedral rock. There the fairway width is only 35 m instead of the otherwise required 50 m and the flow speed is increased, so that low-powered cargo ships in this area are supported by tugs when driving upstream. Commercial shipping is not allowed to meet at this point, the traffic is controlled by the Magdeburg Waterways Construction Office , which is located upstream on the left side of the Sternbrücke and downstream on the Magdeburger Werder at the entrance to the Zollelbe .

In the shipping industry is true! used to this day as a warning call , the expression comes from Low German; see list of nautical technical terms (N to Z) #W .
