Waikawa Harbor is a natural harbor in the Southland District of the Southland regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Waikawa means something like "dark" or "bitter water" in the Māori language .

The Waikawa Harbor is located approximately 65 km southeast from Invercargill at the south side of the South Island of New Zealand, with access to the Pacific Ocean via the Porpoise Bay where the natural harbor opens. The natural harbor, which is open to the west, is around 5.4 km long and measures around 2.6 km at its widest point. The port entrance is 210 m wide, while the coastline extends to around 21.5 km.
The only small settlement on the banks of Waikawa Harbor is Waikawa , on the western part of the natural harbor.
history
The Waikawa Harbor was used between the 1880s and the 1920s intensively for whaling and the transportation of goods, resulting from the gold mining, flax cultivation and agriculture. From the 1920s, shipping was then stopped.
