Waitati is a village within the urban area of Dunedin City in the Otago regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
Waitati , which was previously called Blueskin , took its name from the river of the same name that flows through the village. The current name of the village seems to be a modification of the composition of the Maori terms “ wai ” for water and “ tete ” for ducks.
geography
The village is located around 15 km north of Dunedin city center on Blueskin Bay , an inlet protected by a headland from the Pacific Ocean . The Waitati River flows through the inlet before reaching the sea. The New Zealand State Highway 1 , which is also known in the region as the " Dunedin Northern Motorway ", runs through the western part of the town . The Main South Line railroad runs along Blueskin Bay and crosses Waitati . The old station has been preserved, as a siding and parts of the old station building are used by railway workers.

Waitati was a destination for many German emigrants. Therefore, Waitati has a relatively high proportion of residents of German descent to this day. 4.2% of the residents of Waitati still speak the German language.
