Waited Up 'Til It Was Light is the first real studio album by the British indie rock band Johnny Foreigner from Birmingham . The predecessor WeLeftYouSleepingAndGoneNow was recorded by itself and only appeared in limited numbers. Waited Up 'Til It Was Light was released on June 2nd, 2008 in Great Britain by the independent label Best Before Records. It was sold through online retailers in North America on July 22nd before it hit record stores on September 23rd. The album was recorded in Hoboken (New Jersey) with the producer Machine, who had previously worked with the progressive rock group King Crimson , among others . The album artwork was designed by Lewes Herriot and shows various locations in Birmingham. The British version of the album also includes interchangeable album covers .

It is often said that the song Cranes and Cranes and Cranes and Cranes sampled the theme song from the American sitcom The Charming Jeannie . However, the track only starts with the melody of the title song before moving on to the actual song. However, the lyrics to the song contain a reference to the series.

The website Drowned in Sound gave Alexei Berrow, guitarist and singer of the band, a detailed explanation of each track.

reception

The album received mostly positive reviews. NME awarded eight out of ten points and wrote:

“And while 'Waited…' more than impresses as a collection of raucous singalongs, it's the heartstrings threaded throughout that make it an album to fall in love with and Johnny Foreigner a band to believe in.”

“And while 'Waited…' is more than impressed with its collection of noisy songs to sing along to, it's the innermost feelings that run through that make it an album to fall in love with and Johnny Foreigner a band to listen to it is believed."

Tony Robert Whyte from Drowned in Sound also awarded eight out of ten points, stating:

“So long as they're dancing to songs as near perfect of pop-rock shape and size as these, the world is a better place. […] It's no 10/10 - to award such a mark for a debut album would be to ask the band to call it quits, as they're unlikely to ever trump it - but it is a definite contender, alongside Los Campesinos! 's Hold On Now, Youngster , Foals '' Antidotes' and Wild Beasts ' forthcoming Limbo, Panto, for home-grown debut of the year. "

“As long as they [young people] are dancing to near perfect pop-rock shapes and sizes like this, the world is a better place. [...] It's not a 10/10 - getting such a rating for a debut album would be like asking the band to break up because it's unlikely they will ever trump something like that - but it's definitely a contender, alongside Los Campesinos ! ' Hold on Now, Youngster ... , Foals Antidotes and Wild Beasts soon Limbo, Panto , for the best self-created Debut of the Year. "

Michael Berick from Allmusic gave 3.5 out of five points and wrote:

"While Johnny Foreigner's manic enthusiasm gives their music an ADD quality at times, it also is what helps to make this delightfully cheeky disc such an exhilarating listening experience."

"While Johnny Foreigner's insane enthusiasm for the music at times gives it an ADHD quality, it is nonetheless what gives this delightfully cheeky record such an exhilarating listening experience."
