Wake is a Canadian grindcore band from Calgary that was formed in 2009.

history

The five-piece band was founded in autumn 2009 and released the EP Surrounded by Human Filth in spring 2010 . In addition to appearing in western and central Canada, the band also completed two tours of the west coast of the United States in the same year . In 2011, the German label 7 Degrees Records released the debut album Leeches , which was produced by Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer . In the same year it went on tour through the American Midwest and Canada. The band also moved to Mengroth Studios in New York City with Colin Marston as producer. These songs were used for a split release with Dephosphorus from Greece , which was released in April 2012 on 7 Degrees Records. After a US tour in the summer of 2012 and a European tour in the fall, with an appearance at the Bloodshed Fest , another split was released in the winter, this time with Rehashed from Saskatoon on the Boston label Give Praise Records . In July 2013 the second album False was released by 7 Degrees Records and Handshake Inc. In addition, a second tour through Europe was held. In the same year the band was seen at the Maryland Deathfest . After a split release with Theories on 7 Degrees Records in 2014, Sentient Ruin Laboratories released the album Sowing the Seeds of a Worthless Tomorrow in 2016 .

style

In an interview with Simon Dümpelmann from Rock Hard , Rob Strawberry stated that most of the members grew up in the hardcore and punk scene. According to Dümpelmann, Sowing the Seeds of a Worthless Tomorrow is far more intense and complex compared to its predecessor. Strawberry said that he mostly wrote the riffs and the basic structures of the songs before working out the songs together. The lyrics on the album are not only about "the systematic destruction of the planet", but also about "our broken social structures such as religions, governments and general togetherness". Dümpelmann had reviewed Sowing the Seeds of a Worthless Tomorrow two issues previously . On the previous album, the band played energetic Grindcore, which was not very original. Now the band has expanded its spectrum and incorporated influences from Death Metal and Crustcore . In addition, the band throttled the tempo for “the heaviness effect” , while “atmospheric weirdnesses” would be reminiscent of Dephosphorus.
