Athletic career

At the age of 20, Waldemar Neuendorf was one of the youngest players in the squad of the company sports association (BSG) Gera Süd for the first season of the East Zone Football League, which was founded in 1949 (later the GDR Oberliga ). The defender came to his first zone league assignment on the 7th matchday in the encounter between Gera Süd and ZSG Altenburg . In the 1-1 draw, coach Erich Dietel called him in as a left-back. Neuendorf made a total of ten league appearances by the 18th matchday. In 1950 he was appointed to the state selection of Thuringia , for which he played two games.

Then Neuendorf switched to the second-class BSG Mechanik Jena . In what was later to be known as the GDR league , he held a regular position as a right defender from the start, and of the 20 league games in the 1950/51 season he played 17 games. He completed the 1951/52 season without any failure, which the Jenaer, now competing as BSG Motor, ended as promoted to the GDR league. In August 1951 Neuendorf took part in the football tournament within the III. World Festival of Youth and Students in East Berlin .

The league season 1952/53 was disappointing for Neuendorf. He was mainly used in the reserve team, only towards the end of the season he played in two league matches. In addition, he had to experience relegation from the league for the second time. In his third season in Jena, Neuendorf was able to win a regular place again. In the GDR league season 1953/54 he was absent only once in the 26 point games, now played almost continuously on the left side of defense and was able to present himself as a goal scorer for the first time with three goals.

In the summer of 1954, Neuendorf began studying at the University of Rostock . In order to be able to continue playing football, he joined the GDR league club BSG Warnowwerft in nearby Warnemünde , together with his previous coach Kurt Findeisen and two other Jena players . He got there on the 4th game day of the 1954/55 season with his first league game as a right defender and then played all other games until the end of the season. On matchday 12, coach Findeisen used him for the first time as a left-back, and Neuendorf then retained this position in all other games.

Waldemar Neuendorf then ended his career as a competitive footballer at the age of 29. In his seven-year career he had played twelve league games (without a goal) and 87 GDR league games with five goals.
