Vinz was born into a family of teachers as the youngest of nine children. After attending the Royal High School in Wiesbaden until 1922 , he completed a one-year internship at the Wiesbaden- Schierstein shipyard . He then went to Kiel and studied at the local mechanical engineering school. After completing his studies, he went to the Güldner machine factory in Aschaffenburg as an engineer and designed gas engines . In 1931 he took a job at the Deutz AG engine factory in Cologne . His field of work included the development of 4-stroke diesel engines intended for use on ships and as electrical stations. In 1935 he moved to the Lincke-Hoffmann company in Breslau . Here, too, he was involved in the development of motors and generators. After four years he took up a job at the Magdeburg company Schäffer & Budenberg , where he held the function of technical advisor to the commercial director Fritz Riepe until 1949 . He contributed to a re-profiling of the company with a streamlining of the product range, in particular towards diesel engines and chemical plants, and in 1957 was temporarily acting head of the company.

After the establishment of the Magdeburg University of Heavy Mechanical Engineering in 1953, Vinz was a member of the university's senate for several years as a representative of industry. In 1968 he retired from professional life for health reasons. At least in the 1980s, Vinz lived at Förderstedter Straße 76 in Magdeburg's Leipziger Straße district .
