Valeryan Pidmohylnyj

Valeryan Petrowytsch Pidmohylnyj ( Ukrainian Валер'ян Петро́вич Підмоги́льний ; born February 2, 1901 in Tschapli, today Dnipropetrovsk Oblast ; † November 3, 1937 on the Solovetsky Islands ) was a Ukrainian writer . With his work Die Stadt ( Місто - Misto , 1928) he is considered to be the founder of the modern neo-realist novel in his country.

life and work

Valerjan Pidmohylnyj grew up as the son of an estate manager in Tschapli. He attended the village school and received private French lessons with his sister. In 1918 he graduated from secondary school in Katerynoslaw ; The following years, marked by the October Revolution, are poorly documented - one source says that Pidmohylnyj participated in the civil war as a supporter of Symon Petljura , others from studying at a university in Kiev or from various jobs as a teacher in his home region. What is certain is that his first story Difficult Question ( Важке питання - Waschke pytannja ) dates from 1917 and that he published his first stories in 1920 in the Katerynoslav magazine Sitsch ( Січ ). In 1920 a first collection of short stories was printed in Katerynoslaw. During this period the writer also began translating into Ukrainian the works of French authors such as Anatole France and Guy de Maupassant .

In 1921/1922 Pidmohylny married and moved with his wife to Kiev, where he initially worked as a teacher.

In the 1930s , which were shaped by Stalinism , the writer could not publish. He lost his post as editor and was arrested and tortured several times. After a forced confession, he was sentenced to 10 years in a camp on the Solovetsky Islands in 1935 . On November 3, 1937, shortly before the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution , he and other prisoners were executed by shooting.

In 1956 Pidmohylnyj was officially rehabilitated during the " thaw period ", but none of his works were published; they first appeared in print in 1991.
