Wallace Jones (musician)
Wallace Jones (born November 16, 1906 in Baltimore , † March 23, 1983 ) was an American jazz trumpeter .
Jones played from 1930 in local bands in his hometown such as Ike Dixons Harmony Birds or Percy Glascoes Kit Kat Orchestra . In the mid-1930s he moved to New York City , where he first worked in the band of his cousin Chick Webb and then from 1936 played with Willie Bryant . From 1938 he was a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra , where he replaced Arthur Whetsol . He stayed with Ellington until 1944 and also took part in the 1940 concert in Fargo ; however, according to Collier , Jones got "with Cootie Williams and Rex Stewart as the established trumpet stars (...) little room for solos". He can be heard as a soloist with Ellington in “ Prelude to a Kiss ” (1938), “Something to Live for” and “Serenade to Sveden” (1939). In the second half of the 1940s he played with Benny Carter , Snub Mosley and in the sextet of John Kirby (1947) before retiring from the jazz scene and working as an undertaker .
