De Wallen by day (2012)

De Wallen (also: De Walletjes called) is a red light district in Amsterdam-Centrum . It is located in one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam . It is particularly known for being one of the first areas in the world where prostitutes work legally and are organized. The walls mainly include the area east of Damrak , which is enclosed by Warmoesstraat, Zeedijk, the Nieuwmarkt and the adjacent Chinatown district . The main streets in the district are the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and the Oudezijds Achterburgwal.

Together with the Singelgebied and the Ruysdaelkade , the Wallen form the Rosse Buurt ("Red Light District") of Amsterdam. Many sex workers (around 20 percent nationwide) make use of the raamprostitutie ( window prostitution ) typical of the Netherlands .

The ramparts are in operation practically around the clock. It is not until the early morning hours that things are quieter. The prostitutes come from all over the world. Around a third of prostitutes are Dutch citizens .

The Italian-French co-production Girl in the Shop Window by director Luciano Emmer with Bernard Fresson , Lino Ventura , Marina Vlady and Magali Noël in the leading roles, published in 1961, partly takes place on original locations in De Wallen.
