Girls in the window is an Italian- French film by director Luciano Emmer from the year 1961 . He plays in the Netherlands in a coal mine , in the red light district De Wallen in Amsterdam and on the North Sea . Its German-language premiere took place on September 1, 1961.
action
Vincenzo comes with a few friends as guest workers from Italy in a coal mine in the Netherlands. He is by Federico in working with the jackhammer admitted. When there is a mining accident in the colliery , you are buried and can only be rescued after days. Vincenzo decides to stop working underground and return to Italy.
Before that, Vincenzo and Federico go to Amsterdam to celebrate their rescue. In the red light district, Federico meets his old friend Chanel, whom he can persuade to spend the weekend with him at the seaside. Vincenzo manages to interest the cool blonde Else in himself. He spends the night with her, misses his train and so the two of them also drive to the sea in Else's convertible.
An ultimately harmless boat trip by Else and Federico triggers a jealous drama in the course of which Vincenzo falls out with Federico. The love between him and Else is also put to the test, as is that between Chanel and Federico. Vincenzo returns to Amsterdam by bus.
Else brings Vincenzo his suitcase to the station, but this time he deliberately missed the train because he wants to marry her. Back in the mine, he reconciles with Federico. You are going to have a double wedding.
background
The film had big problems with Italian censorship. So it had to be edited and parts of the dialogue had to be changed so that it could be approved for people aged 16 and over.
criticism
"What begins as a remarkably designed proletarian study (Pasolini worked on the script) quickly develops into a clumsy milieu drama that exploits its subject rather than critically masters it."
"This unusual mixture of melodrama and neo-realistic social study amazes with the precise description of the milieu of the Dutch coalfield and the amusement district of Amsterdam."
