The Maria Schnee church is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church on the Gleinalpe in the municipality of Übelbach in Styria . It is subordinate to the parish of Übelbach . Its history goes back to the beginning of the 18th century.

Location

The church stands on the old pass road at 1586 meters above the Gleinalmsattel on the Gleinalpe , at the foot of the Speikkogel , near the Gleinalmschutzhaus.

history

Records of paid trade fairs at the shelter on the Gleinalpe are already available from 1670 . The church itself was consecrated in 1711. Count Gottfried von Dietrichstein had the church rebuilt in 1740. From the 18th to the beginning of the 19th century, holy masses were regularly celebrated in the church on Sundays and public holidays during the cattle drive. At the beginning of the 19th century it became apparent that it was not possible to maintain this measuring operation, which is why Julie von Öttingen-Wallerstein agreed with the Rein monastery in 1869 that masses would only be celebrated on five days of remembrance of saints. This agreement continues to this day. These five days are the feast days of Saint John the Baptist (June 24th), the apostles James (July 25th) and Bartholomew (August 24th), as well as the feast days of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (July 2nd) and Mary Snow (5th of August).

The anteroom of the church was refurbished in 1979. On October 3, 2004, lightning struck the church. It was then rebuilt and was re-consecrated on August 29, 2005. Since the death of Eleanor von Liechtenstein in 2008, the church has been owned by the “Princess Eleanor von und zu Liechtenstein” foundation.

description

View of the high altar of the church

The steeple on the western side of the church has a pointed helmet as a roof. The furnishing of the single-nave interior dates largely from the middle of the 18th century. The stone high altar is as wide as the western wall on which it stands. His altar leaf, painted around 1740 to 1750 in the manner of Philipp Carl Laubmann , shows the conversion of St. Hubertus as well as a copy of the miraculous image of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and was restored in 1978/79. The upper picture depicts the Holy Trinity . On the sides of the altar there are two wooden statues depicting Saints Leonhard and Oswald , venerated as cattle patrons . In a wall niche of the church there is a group of statues with the crucified Savior , Mary and the Apostle John . The pulpit of the church is portable. In the anteroom of the church there is a statue of St. Joseph made by a South Tyrolean craftsman in 1979 . To the right of the passage inside the church is a stone tablet with a request to the Blessed Mother .
