Goals and Activities

Conferences and excursions, petition for the preservation of the Archaeological Museum

Construction activity in the canton of Valais has been endangering archaeological treasures, monuments, buildings and landscapes for several years. In order to raise awareness of the canton's cultural heritage, the Valais Archaeological Society organizes conferences and excursions, participates in collaboration with the canton of Valais or supports research, publication and dissemination projects such as exhibitions and symposiums.

On December 3, 2007, the Society submitted a petition with 7026 signatures against the closure of the Cantonal Archaeological Museum in Sion, founded in 1976 . To mark the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Petit-Chasseur dolmen near Sion in 1961, the Society was one of four groups that organized the corresponding events in 2011. In addition to her, the members of the scientific committee were the representatives of canton archeology, then the Valais museums and the University of Geneva . In 2012, under the aegis of the Valais Archaeological Society, the conference “Clothing and jewelry by women of the Alpine region in the first millennium BC” took place in Brig .

Project «Mémoire 21»

2014 initiated Archaeological Society Wallis the project "Mémoire 21" , which was supported by many organizations. According to the initiators, the project should «alert the public about the loss of their cultural heritage and develop proposals for solutions». The project coordinator was Claire Epiney-Nicoud. In 2015 an event took place on the desolate situation of archeology in the canton. In April 2016 around eighty experts presented a strategic plan for the next ten years with suggestions for over thirty measures to save threatened locations and upgrade the historical heritage. The plan was officially presented to State Councilor Esther Waeber-Kalbermatten on April 28, 2016 in the hall of the Grand Council in Sion . The project is based on Article 2 of the Namur Declaration adopted on April 24, 2015 at the 6th Conference of Ministers for Cultural Heritage of the Council of Europe : “Cultural heritage is a fundamental part of European identity; it is a matter of general interest and its transmission to future generations is a matter of shared responsibility; it is a unique, fragile, non-renewable and non-delocalizable resource. ”For a year, the said experts from various fields participated in the project with contributions to the protection and appreciation of the historical heritage. On April 25 of this year, a series of events entitled “10,000 years underground, archeology and cultural heritage in Valais” began, which lasted several months. Publications such as “Sion, une ville immortelle” were created for this purpose.

As part of the project, the exhibition Tamed Death took place in the Sion History Museum in 2017 , which documented the development of faith and funerary rites in the Sion region over 7,000 years.

The 180-page final report of the project was titled Promoting and protecting the archaeological and architectural heritage of Valais. Current challenges and action plan or Promouvoir et protéger le patrimoine historique enfoui et bâti du Valais. Défis actuels et plan d'action published in September 2017. 550 copies were sent “in Valais and Switzerland, in particular to all Valais municipalities and to the responsible federal and cantonal authorities”.
