Wally Hayward (actually Wallace Henry Hayward; born July 10, 1908 in Johannesburg , † April 28, 2006 ibid) was a South African long-distance runner who had his greatest successes in marathons and ultra marathons .

In 1930 he won the almost 90 km long Comrades Marathon . In the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney he won bronze over six Miles and finished fourth over three miles.

In 1930, 1932 and 1937 he was South African champion over ten miles, in 1937 also over four miles.

In the Second World War he was awarded the British Empire Medal for his bravery .

In 1946 he was South African marathon champion in 2:39:02 h and won the premiere of the Jackie Gibson Marathon in 2:43:52 h. In 1950 he became national runner-up in the marathon and won the Comrades Marathon. The following year he defended his title in the Comrades Marathon with a course record of 6:14:08 h and came second in the Jackie Gibson Marathon.

In 1952 he was again South African marathon champion in 2:37:01 h and qualified for the Olympic Games in Helsinki , where he finished tenth with his personal best of 2:31:51 h.

In 1953 he was the first runner to stay below the six-hour mark in the Comrades Marathon with 5:52:30 h. In autumn he won the 83.3 km London to Brighton Race , set a world best time in the 100-mile road race with 12:20:28 h on October 24th and set a world record in London on November 20 with 256.400 km in the 24th -Hour run on. In 1954 he finished second in the South African Marathon Championship, set a course record for the Up Run at the Comrades Marathon with 6:12:55 h and won the Jackie Gibson Marathon.

A travel allowance, which he for his trip to England had assumed led to his South African Athletic and Cycling Association of the Amateur but knew status, after which he was denied further launches during Comrades Marathon. The decision was not reversed until 1974.

After having limited himself to shorter distances for a long time, he started again in the Comrades Marathon in 1988. With 9:44:15 h he made it into the front half of the field. The following year the nation fevered with him when, at 10:58:03 h, he was just two minutes below the finish time at the time. At 80, he is the oldest finisher of the race to date.

The Wally Hayward Marathon has been held in Centurion in his honor since 1977 . Since 2007, in the Comrades Marathon, runners outside the top ten who have stayed under six hours have been awarded the Wally Hayward Medal.
