Walter A. Abbott (born December 16, 1898 in Birmingham ; † 2nd quarter 1945 there ) was an English football player .

Career

Abbott, son of the English national player of the same name, Walter Abbott , made his debut in January 1920 as a test player for the Grimsby Town reserve team and scored the winning goal in the 3-2 win against the reserves of Barnsley FC . In the following weeks Abbott appeared regularly as a goalscorer for the reserve team, including in the games against Chesterfield Municipal ( final scores 1: 1 and 1: 2) and in the 1-0 win over the reserves of Lincoln City . In early March 1920 he received from the Football Association permission to train in his place of residence at Birmingham FC . At the end of the month he made his debut in the Football League Second Division for Grimsby in a 2-0 home win over Port Vale .

In April 1920, four more league missions followed in Grimsby's first team on the left half- forward position , in which he worked together with left winger Albert Smith and center forward Harry Storer . The two home games against Clapton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur also ended with 2-0 wins. Despite these three successes, the club rose at the end of the season as bottom of the table in the newly created Third Division and Abbott joined the Midland League playing club Chesterfield Municipal , against whom he had recently met twice. Abbott played 26 league games for Chesterfield during the season, mostly he formed the right attacking side with Herbert Mosley when the club finished third at the end of the season and successfully applied for a return to the Football League .

For Abbott himself, however, there was no return to the Football League, in the 1921/22 season he played in the Birmingham & District League for Worcester City and scored nine goals in 19 competitive appearances, making him the third best goalscorer of the after Harry Parsonage and Arthur Hall Teams. In July 1922 he was traded as a newcomer for the position of center runner at league rivals Tamworth Castle, but at the start of the season he was called up at Tamworth as a center forward and scored in the 3: 4 defeat by Redditch. In September 1922 he lost with Tamworth in the final of the Nuneaton Charity Cup against Nuneaton Town with 1: 2, Abbott had scored shortly before the end of the game. Tamworth finished last in the table and retired to the Birmingham Combination , Abbott, however, remained in the league and played the following two seasons for Oakengates Town.

For the 1925/26 season he returned to Tamworth Castle; In October 1925, a team photo was printed in the local newspaper on the occasion of an 8-2 success in the Birmingham Combination via Walsall Wood. Most recently, he was active at the local level in Birmingham for Stewart Street Old Boys .
