Walter Adrian

Walter P. Adrian (born October 14, 1897 in Bern ; † 1963 ) was a Swiss writer , art critic and journalist .

life and work

Walter Adrian grew up in Bern and studied at the universities of Bern, Zurich and Rome after graduating from high school . During his student days, Adrian often stayed in Italy and wrote his first short stories and travel novels .

Adrian received his doctorate in New German, German and art history, wrote his dissertation on Carl Spitteler in 1922 and then worked as a freelance journalist, especially as an art critic for the newspaper Der Bund . His beginning literary and journalistic work was under the aegis of the features editor Hugo Marti . Adrian was also responsible for the A. Francke Verlag in Bern as editor and propagandist.

Further trips followed to Morocco , Algiers , the Sahara , Central Europe and the north. To do this, he undertook a hike from Rome to Naples through the ancient Via Appia .

Adrian was a member of the Berne Writers' Association (BSV) and received the Swiss Schiller Prize in 1942 and 1957 and the City of Bern Prize for Literature in 1948 and 1957 . Some of his works were youth oriented.
