Paul Neubauer

Paul Neubauer (born October 17, 1962 in Los Angeles ) is an American violist.

Neubauer studied at the Juilliard School with Paul Doktor , completing a Bachelor's and Master's degree. Other teachers were Alan de Veritch and William Primrose . At the age of 21 he became the first violist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and thus the youngest section leader in a string section in the history of this orchestra. He was a member of the orchestra for six years and during this time he had more than twenty appearances as a soloist, including Krzysztof Penderecki's Viola Concerto under the direction of the composer.

He has also given concerts with more than 100 other orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the National Symphony Orchestra , Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra , Detroit Symphony Orchestra , Dallas Symphony Orchestra , San Francisco Symphony Orchestra , Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra . He played world premieres and American premieres of viola concerts by Béla Bartók , Joel Friedmans , Reinhold Glières , Gordon Jacobs , Aaron Jay Kernis , Henri Lazarofs , Detlev Müller-Siemens , David Otts , Tobias Pickers , Richard Suters and Joan Towers and recorded several of them Works on CD. Two of his albums were nominated for a Grammy .

As a chamber musician, he has performed with André Watts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art , with Joshua Bell and Steven Isserlis at Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and with Pinchas Zukerman , James Galway , Vladimir Spivakov and Alicia de Larrocha at the Mostly Mozart Festival . He has also worked with well-known string quartets such as the Emerson String Quartet , the Juilliard String Quartet and the Brentano String Quartet . He has taught at the Juilliard School since 1989, and also teaches at the Mannes College of Music and The New School . His students include Richard O'Neill , Scott Lee , Gilad Karni and Che-Yen Chen .
