Richard O'Neill is an American violist .

O'Neill graduated from the Music School of the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Music magna cum laude and received a Masters degree from the Juilliard School and an artist diploma as the first violist. His teachers were Donald McInnes , Karen Tuttle and Paul Neubauer .

As a soloist he has performed internationally with renowned orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra , Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra , the Korean Symphony , the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra and the Kremerata Baltica under the direction of conductors such as Andrew Davis , Miguel Harth-Bedoya , Wladimir Jurowski , Eiji Ōue , François-Xavier Roth , Vassily Sinaisky , Leonard Slatkin , Yannick Nezet-Seguin . He has given concerts at Carnegie Hall , imKennedy Center , and the Wigmore Hall , the Louvre , the Auditorio Nacional de Música and the Teatro Colon .

In terms of chamber music, O'Neill has worked with Emanuel Ax , Leon Fleisher , Gidon Kremer , Garrick Ohlsson , Menahem Pressler , Daniil Trifonov , James Ehnes , Boris Giltburg , Mischa Maisky , Steven Isserlis , Edgar Meyer , the Juilliard String Quartet and the Emerson String Quartet together.

He is also a member of the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center , principal violist of the Camerata Pacifica and, since 2020, a member of the Takacs Quartet, succeeding Geraldine Walther . He is particularly interested in new music, and in addition to works by Lera Auerbach , Unsuk Chin , Mario Davidovsky , Jo Kondo , Matthias Pintscher , Christopher Theofanidis , George Tsontakis , Melinda Wagner and John Zorns , he has given world premieres of commissioned works by Elliott Carter , John Harbisons and Huang Ruos and Paul Chiharas .

O'Neill's discography includes numerous solo albums, several of which achieved platinum awards. His recording of works by Arnold Schoenberg was twice nominated for a Grammy (2006 and 2010) . In 2007, the New York City Council awarded him a proclamation for his services to music . In addition, O'Neill is a goodwill ambassador for the Korean Red Cross, the Special Olympics and the United Nations Children's Fund, and has participated in charitable marathons.
