James Ehnes

James Ehnes (born January 27, 1976 in Brandon , Manitoba ) is a Canadian violinist .

biography

James Ehnes, son of trumpeter Alan Ehnes, who teaches at the Brandon University School of Music , began his musical training on the violin at the age of four. At the age of nine he became a student of the famous Canadian violinist Francis Chaplin . In 1987, at the age of eleven, he became known to a larger audience for the first time by winning first place in the Canadian music competition in the field of stringed instruments. The following year he also won first prize in the same category at the Canadian Music Festival , making it the youngest ever.

He began his actual career as a concert violinist at the age of thirteen, when he performed with the Orchester symphonique de Montréal . Over the years he won numerous prizes and later studied at the Meadowmount School of Music and from 1993 at the Juilliard School , which he graduated in 1997.

In October 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Brandon University and in July 2007 he was admitted to the Royal Society of Canada as the youngest ever elected member .

James Ehnes plays the Stradivarius “Marsick” from 1715 from David L. Fulton's private collection of instruments. He currently resides in Bradenton, Florida with his family .

James Ehnes received very positive feedback from critics and various newspapers because of his virtuoso playing. The Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail called him “Jascha Heifetz of our days”. In March 2009, the London Times praised Ehnes' "tangible joy" on the instrument, his perfect intonation and phrasing .
